January ... 2006 Ways to Create Your New Year
Dear Creative Readers,

Just kidding...I don't have 2006 ways to create your new year .. but I know there are at least that many - maybe not all practical but many may be entertaining and we feed our creative spirit when we a-muse it.

Quick Creative Activitation: If you're looking for a little creative ignition, you could number a page from 1 to 50 (or 100 if you're courageous) and quickly brainstorm whatever comes to your mind about the your 2006 journey. Play with it.. Have fun with it.. say the absurd, repeat yourself, go fast so the inner critic doesn't censor ideas that could lead to insight, use adjectives, nouns, verbs - List trips, get-togethers, thoughts you want to think, creative projects, people, pets, nature - use single words, two words or short sentences -don't feel a need to analyze or to be perfect or to explain. Just go! It may end up sounding like a litany, a poem or prose .. or it might sound like an "I get to ....." list (versus an "I have to..." list). Two things I KNOW could be on your list is the Dream Board workshop on the 25th on-line, on-phone Muse Journey beginning on the 30th (see events section below).

The creative process makes great leaps, takes detours, latches on to associations and ahas. Thus, you may have noticed that the Muse letter animal theme from the past five months leaped to a household appliance theme. That creative process can be so unpredictable (as can the attention span of this Muse-Letter staff). So since January is national hot tea month, this month's theme is the Teapots of January. I bought myself a new, one of a kind, whimsical teapot on e-bay. Do a tea related thing for yourself. Tea that rhymes with C that stands for Create. Stay tuned for the Blenders of February.

"Meanwhile, let us have a sip of tea. The afternoon glow is brightening the bamboos, the fountains are bubbling with delight, the soughing of the pines is heard in our kettle. Let us dream of evanescence, and linger in the beautiful foolishness of things." ~Okakura Kakuzo

Peace, laughter, compassion and at least 2006 inspired small steps for the upcoming year. It's a blank canvas, a new tune, and a fresh start.. but don't forget the growth and all you've done last year. It counts too. Consider what worked best and do some more.

dispatching Muses in your direction,
Jill

Anger Imagin-ment with the Muse Bea Silly
Ya know, us mortals.. every now and then, we experience the discomfort and inconvenience of ANGER. When we believe someone has wronged us - the act of what they did and how we did or didn't handle it can occupy our thoughts when our thinking would be better served focusing on our creative passions - writing, creating, inventing, engaging in idea expansion and in the creative foreplay we need to build motivation to ruthlessly commit to our pursuits. We need our minds for THAT - not for obsessing about angry moments that are simply a fact of life. Yet, anger is a part of life and cannot be suppressed without detrimental consequences such as constipation, zits, or homicidality. Soo, we have to go through the anger to the other side - no fun. We need to accept that we GET angry - be compassionate and just go on (as the Muse, Marge would say).

I recently found myself obsessing about an incident I thought was UNFAIR. I then got angry at myself for thinking about it so much, and then got angry at getting angry at myself. You get the picture.. inconvenient to creativity. ACK.

So I consulted Bea Silly and she gifted me with the visualization pasted below for angry moments. Try it and if you feel so inspired, please let me know if it worked for you.. it worked for me and it worked for Sue.

Curing Obsessive Thoughts About People Whom Have Wronged You (or who you have wronged)

1. Relax your body, breathe, open the portal of your imagination and submit to its amazing magnitude for far reaching possibilities beyond the mundane, beyond anger's inconvenience- into the reach of awe.

2. Take your obsession about a person who has treated you unfairly - (an obsession that pops up like gopher mounds all over your garden of flowering moments and budding inspirations). It doesn't matter at this point who is right and who is wrong, although as a reader of this Muse letter, know that the staff (that would be me) is on your side.

3. DO NOT:
a). try to get rid of the obsession by pushing it out of your mind -
b). attempt to suppress it, avoid it, or medicate it
c). scold yourself because you vowed to stop thinking about it and it just slipped into your thinking again raising your blood pressure, lowering your resistance to crankiness and tempting you to take it out on innocent shopping clerks.
(a through c saps energy that you COULD be using for creative fuel).

4. Now see your obsession being wrapped in a beautiful package glowing with golden light, soften around it.. it's your obsession. It's your creation- really it is.

5. Place the package that contains your obsession on the lower-end of a seesaw (Optional: pink seesaw)

6. See a wonderfully jovial, festively dressed, amply flabby lady (or man if you prefer) falling out of the sky (with a sly smile), (without a concern) and landing on the high-end of same, possibly pink seesaw with a drum roll culminating in a crash of cymbals.

7. See the packaged obsession, flying with a wake of golden light, accompanied by tuba or kazoo music, on the wing through the blue sky and eventually landing in an ocean where two dolphins toss it back and forth with their noses (making dolphin laughing sounds).

8. Take your hands and wipe any remaining imaginary slime from your body and clear the atmosphere around you (preferably with cedar incense but bubbles work too) .

9. See yourself leaping into the air, clicking your heels together and walking a side-to-side celebratory saunter down a yellow brick path where you realize (with the help of a well-kempt, nicely attired good witch with matching wand) that you had this power all along.

10. Transmute into the present moment with a smile spilling all over you and the surrounding vicinity. Decide what creative act you would like to focus on, especially as it has the potential to make someone else smile.

11. Do not do this while driving or operating heavy equipment (or soufflés and children for that matter).
Repeat if necessary

Jump. Higher. Release
Anger, frustration, fear.
None of that today. Yesterday, yes. Tomorrow, perhaps, but
Understand this -- not today, not now.
Awake and face morning. Greet the clock. Welcome the clouds. But not the
Racing thoughts.
You've given too much to them already.

Nicky Pitman
January begins with a spin on her new year ahead,
Awakening to beginnings on a snow-covered sled.
Quietly anticipating what she will do,
With 365 days of everything new.
She can choose to hang over the times of last year,
Or she can toast to adventure with laughter and cheer.
She can travel each season anew- who knows what's in store,
A tourist of the year- there's so much to explore!
She might plan ahead or spontaneously combust-
It doesn't really matter, for her there's no "must"!
All that she knows is that she's got first choice,
And the eleven months following will have to find their own voice.
But she'll start them off as the leader of the pack,
Moving happily forward, this gal aint looking back!

RECIPE FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR
Take twelve whole months.
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness,
hate, and jealousy.
Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.
Now cut each month into twenty-eight, thirty, or thirty-one different parts,
but don't make up the whole batch at once.
Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients.
Mix well into each day one part of faith,
one part of patience, one part of courage,
and one part of work.
Add to each day one part of hope,
faithfulness, generosity, and kindness.
Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation,
and one good deed.
Season the whole with a dash of good spirits,
a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
and a cupfull of good humor.
Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thouroughly over radient joy,
garnish with a smile,
and serve with quietness, unselfishness,
and cheerfulness.
You're bound to have a happy new year.
