Welcome August

year.
"Yet
it is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged truth comes to the
top." ~Virginia Woolf
Dear Creativity Seeker and
Friend,
Thanks for clicking in. This month's Muse-letter
takes you into a lull, on to an archaeological dig, and through a looking
glass. Summer's not over yet, it may inspire postponary (for instance this Muse-letter). That's okay ONLY if you
don't beat yourself up about procrastinating. Letting go of the
process can unearth a simple small step that has been waiting
for the pause it needed to get your attention. That small step can
unveil a world that will engage you in an unexpected exploration. Joy is
in there somewhere too. Consciously letting go of perpetual motion clears
a space that your Muse might find irresistible to fill. (perpetual procrastination requires creativity coaching,
however) As one of my yoga teachers said, "The struggle
is optional." Surrender the struggle, embrace the space between the
worlds. Clear your head to prepare for receptivity:breathe in receptively
and stare into the following lull of empty space for a moment (exhaling is
also encouraged).
stare here
Go back one "space" if you
stared less than 15 seconds. * Okay, now- consider a Lull journey. Imagine coming to the edge of your
existence as you currently know it, as if coming to the edge of a bustling
metropolis. Come to a space, a void between your current life situation and
what's next. It's a clearing - designed for reverie - you may
hear distant music.. a flute, violin or a single beautiful voice. Listen. A
breeze washes right through you. Your favorite soothing colors and visions
transport you to stillness. Option One: Pick up a
favorite pen and some big paper and begin fluid,
uncensored writing (no stopping to think). Begin with this
sentence: In the space between my worlds..... Option
two: Flip through magazines and let your intuition pick images to
build a collage titled The Space Between My Worlds. Option
three: Take a day off from checking emails, watching TV, and
engaging in whatever it is you do that feels like
mental/emotional/spiritual clutter. If terribly addicted to these things..
take a deliberate hour off (a day would be better), lay in a comfortable
place outside (preferably not the middle of the street) and stare into the sky. Have a stare contest with a
cloud. Imagine the sky were trying to tell you something.. but don't
control it too much.. just be receptive like receiving an inhale. Enjoy
the space between your ears.
* I know, I might
have stared less than 15 seconds too. We get stuck in this
think-we-have-to-go-fast mode and it can be detrimental to finding those
creative-laden spaces between the worlds. So, just to experiment with
rebelling against being stuck in a
fast-paced-MASS-current-of-consciousness and with inventing your own
rhythm - REALLY pause for a moment and let it feel awkward if it does and
let it invite possibilities if it will. Thanks Signed The Muse L u l

really doing nothing." ~Gertrude

Inspiration Archeology: Excavating Ideas
Hmmm! It's August 9th already.. hmmm, she hmmmed again.
I'm seem to be a little behind with the August issue here. Art
Unraveled 2006 is opening in Phoenix next week and I've been
putting off doing the Muse Letter because obsessive preparation for AU's
theme, Pushing the Envelope, has pushed Muse-letter intentions into past
due (or as Spills the Muse would say, "a different time-line than was
expected"). Muse-letter inspiration obscured by the urgent task of
preparing Muse house instruction, imparting unique techniques for building
collages, and getting fuchsia paint out of my hair and off my cats.
Which made me muse
about how to excavate lost inspiration? Is there a way to dig through the
restless mind chatter to dig-up the soul's hidden treasures at will? Can we
unearth ingenuity toward our passion when we are buried under work
pressures? And why am I talking in all these archaeological metaphors
anyway? Here's why: I've been cutting up my boyfriend's Archeology
magazine and in the process, dug up some parallels between archeology and
retrieving the creative process, (shhhh, if Ron finds out I've been
cutting up his Archeology magazine I'll be "ruined"). And as you know*, paying attention and focusing
on creative possibility is often rewarded with serendipities from the
Inspiration Dispatch Centers of the Universe. (IDCU). I found myself in
what I like to term as "a space between the worlds," when I finished my
art and tried to switch gears to writing. So using the vast and holy
creative resource so-named Google, I looked up "space between the worlds"
and uncovered a site
about artist Nathan Olivieira (whom I had never heard
of). Here's what it said: "Since the early 1970s, the
subject of the artist's monotypes has been "Sites". In discussing Nathan
Oliveira's work, curator Susan Landauer states:
Oliveira has always understood that art, like poetry, lives in
the ellipses–the space between the worlds, the space that induces the
viewer to fill in the blanks. The idea is ancient and universal...The
'Site' paintings and monotypes, just as their name implies, suggest
archaeological digs. Oliveira offers clues to the locations–places the
artist has visited...The smoky atmospheres of these works add to their
sense of mystery. And, as always, the identities of the objects in the
pieces are withheld. By presenting fragments of what might be tribal
artifacts and relics such as amulets, vessels and tools, Oliveira seems to
be asking his viewers to engage in an imaginative excavation
and reconstruction."
"Aha," I said in a rather nasal voice, the discovery of
inspiration is once again possible by venturing out of my own world and
into another I might not normally explore. With an excavated
Archeology magazine at my side and the chance discovery
of the above description giving me ideas for prompts, playing was once
again validated as a way to explore what raw material can be connected to
an idea. Making the world of information is a idea playground for a
creative person to dig for connection. Collage is an
avenue of excavating images. In doing so we destroy an existing
structure-a magazine, card, photograph, old painting, etc. A healing
transformation then takes places when we reconstruct a new image in a way
that gratifies us, meets our needs, or brings order to chaos (or in some
cases, brings a more agreeable chaos to an old one). For the writing realm
I looked in the Archeology's text for words and phrases.
Any publication (especially one outside your usual world of interest)
is fertile ground for inspiring our writing if we excavate words and
phrases and then reconstruct them into our own poetry, prose, story, or
even creating ramblings that are filled with just the pleasure nonsense
built from preexisting coherent meanings.
Creativity is often
easier when there's a vessel, a container with which to begin. In other
words, as Landauer says above, filling in blanks rather than starting from
scratch. In writing - using unfinished sentences, a list of words,
or describing a visual can begin a flow. In art, using an example of
someone else's composition, colors, or subject can give us the structure
to start our own very unique work.
My writing excavation with
Archeology magazine involved scanning the pages and
picking the words and phrases that felt like good raw material according
to my quirks and sparks. Find a magazine and choose your own words and
phrases or construct writing based on the following from
Archeology (adding other words as you need) - create poetry, a super
short story, a stream of consciousness, an opinion. halt,
collapse, open, I turned my attention, diverse places, high altitude, door
hinges, open, feature, join, white, fragment, rectangle, flower bed,
particularly intriguing, by coincidence, bag, looking a bit
closer *(as you know, if
you've read my book – now available directly from my website - soon to be
reprinted with a CD from the Muses), http://themuseisin.com/book.html

15th of each month

Prompt: The following writing
and prompts are from a recording I did for Artella a few months ago.
http://artellawordsandart.com/. Barbara sent in her
result. To do this yourself, before reading her response, look at the
lines that Barbara underlined. These are your prompts. Continue with them
for one or two minutes then go on to the next
sentence.
"A Journey to What I
Figured Out" by Barbara J.
Gewirtz
(Inspired by Jill Badonsky's Artella
recording) From an
opening guided imagery: I'm melting tension, softening my jaw and
brow. I see swirls of color breathe through my pen. This is the
first writing I've done since
April 1st. The underlined phrases were oral writing prompts. (Also, I changed the last line, the only revision in this
"free writing"
exercise.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- It wasn't supposed to be that way. Life turned out to be a
long, winding road of gravel shifting beneath my feet. Slowly, my feet
could no longer travel and carry me freely.
The other thing
that happened was that I lost my wings -- my magical means to fly with
others. I was lost in a human flock. There were supposed to be clouds to
shelter me and cool rains to refresh me.
But I didn't care
because I was living unaware. I was living on top of gravel and below
the clouds, suspended anonymously.
The thing that bothers me
the most was my loss of self-vision. I could only witness the
reflections of others. As for myself, I cast no visible shadow.
But
what I figured out is a shadow had cast within me, blinding me
to life's precious
holdings and to being one among a flock of creative, living souls -- each with unique
wings.
I find it easy to reflect back and feature myself
amid the night stars. They are twinkling and shining way above the very ground I have
tread upon for too
long.
What I figured out is that the glimmer comes from
within.
And one last thing I'd like to say is I readily
rely on new light, each day's sun, the communal flicker of candle flames,
the gleaming glow of an orange-skied storm to lead me through paths unfolding ahead of me...my
new dawn. © Barbara J. Gewirtz June 5, 2006

Summer and the Muse Lull: by Muse Child,
Jordan
Pictured: Jordon in Wonderland, my Muse
child, biological child of Jennifer Farr-Jones of Mira
Mesa "To do great work a man must be very
idle as well as very industrious." -Samuel Butler Jordon hasn't contributed a column for awhile perhaps due
to some philosophical angst or perhaps a lull, so I was real glad when her
mom forwarded this. Jordan is one and a half years old, she's my Muse
child. A Muse-child is like a God-child but instead of being responsible
for her religious growth, I'm responsible for her creative growth. Her
mother is actually one of the most creative people I know so this kid
doesn't need a lot of help, but I figured it would be a creative challenge
for all of us for me to figure out what to do as Muse-mother. Maybe
Muse-motherdom will spread and more people like you will help little kids
value creativity. Jordan will be about 25 years old before I can really
make a difference because I'm not too good with kids under that age. So
far I've sent her art work, a dress with matching socks and encouraging
letters that are on about a master's degree reading level - I'm confident
she will appreciate them soon. Today, as you see in the picture, I've sent
her to wonderland via the looking glass of Photoshop. She liked
this. From
Jordon: Hello Muse Mom, Here's my report about Lull. This is my
second summer and I appreciate Lull's gifts of pause, diversion and
gratitude. I rarely fall down anymore, but I willingly lay
down all the time. A horizontal pause on a sidewalk, store floor, or
airplane isle, really changes my situation. The exception to the rule is
laying down on a changing table. When my Mom wants to put a diaper on me,
then it's time to run. Which leads me to my favorite soothing activity-
walking slowly through a sheer curtain. I may be one and a
half, but I think I have mastered Lull's second gift, that of diversion.
My legs are only nine inches long so I notice things when I go for walks.
I go beyond noticing things. I love to rub jade leaves between my fingers.
My neighbours have a Jasmine bush that smells lovely, even when I'm
smelling it standing under their sprinkler. I love the sound my feet make
walking over sewer grates and other metal covers. .. makes me laugh.. Speaking of grates, I'm grateful walking back to our house. That
break helps me come up with new ideas. Instead of my usual "let's put
dog food into the water bowl, I start asking, "how can I make a tower
using household items that will sound like thunder when it falls?" I'm also grateful to have my Muse Mom inspire me to teach me how
important the creative process is in my life. ~signed,
Jordon {I thought I'd
leave in this bottom part of the email from her mom cause it was so funny
and so-1 1/2 year old). Hi Jill, I have to take this kid
out now, she's covered herself in teddy bear stickers and getting into
everything. Jennifer

coach or counselor, you might notice your approach with creative clients
needs to be different or else you lose them. Many creative individuals
rebel. Rebellion and resistance are natural parts of being creative.
Unfortunately, sometimes these dynamics work counter to the intentions of
creative individuals as they rebel against or sabotage coaching.
Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coaching takes into account the dynamics of
creative individuals and the creative process - resistance to authority,
high-sensitivity, the avoidance necessary for incubation, patterns of
self-sabotage when success is experienced, an indirect approach to
setting goals (setting goals can actually block a creative person), the
need for breaks and downtime (a whole week for incubation and daydreaming
can sometimes result in more output than productivity related results ),
the need for nurturing, focus on past creative successes, etc. This
program can empower your life coaching practice with integrity, magnetism
and a sustained relationship with clients.
